Before Pregnancy

  • Good muscle tone before pregnancy helps you to cope very well with the changes in your body during pregnancy and with carrying the weight of your growing baby, and also helps to get your figure back quickly afterwards.
  • Increased the tone of the pelvic floor muscles are very beneficial for ease of childbirth.
  • It takes some time to understand how to feel and use the postural muscles of the body to a sufficient yet subtle and gentle degree to feel the benefits.  Therefore it is of great benefit to learn and practice Pilates before becoming pregnant, before the body changes that occur with pregnancy when a woman feels her body changing and adapting to pregnancy if not daily, on a regular basis.

The general group classes that Anne-Marie offers are perfect for preparing for pregnancy (provided of course that there is no history of  pregnancy-related health complications, in which case doctor’s clearance is necessary).  Please note however, that the general group classes are not suitable when you are pregnant.

During Pregnancy

Anne-Marie currently has no availabilities for pregnancy pilates but here is some useful information regarding the benefits:

  • Relaxation of mind and body in preparation of a newborn.
  • To be able to work around the changes in your body as the weeks go by.
  • Increased the tone of the pelvic floor muscles are very beneficial for ease of childbirth.
  • Good muscle tone during pregnancy helps you to ease tension on your spine and body due to carrying the weight of your growing baby, and also helps to get your figure back quickly afterwards.
  • Ease of breathing as your baby grows and begins to push up against your diaphragm.
  • To accommodate the change in hormones in the body, e.g. relaxin, that gives you more flexibility for childbirth, but care must be taken when moving so that you don’t overstretch or place too much pressure on your joints.
  • For that all-important feel good factor.
  • Speedy recovery after child birth.

Please note  that the general group classes offered at Pilates Haven are not suitable for pregnant ladies.

Provided that there were no particular complications during / after pregnancy and childbirth, the general beginner courses that Anne-Marie runs are perfect for post-pregnancy ladies, because her classes move slowly and thoroughly enough through many basic movements, highlighting the pilates principles in all – this includes an efficiency in using the deep pelvic floor, deep and outer abdominals, and the muscles of the bum to support the pelvis and spine as you move, all so important to reinforce after giving birth, an understanding of the breath pattern and the use of the outer abdonimals and posture awareness to promote ribcage and mid-back support, and also correct shoulder blade and shoulder girdle placement to support the upper back and neck as you move, lift your baby etc.  The beginner options that she offers are very beneficial.  In the case of any particular pregnancy or child-birth health related problems or complications, private training is offered.
